Location Shots

I will be shooting in three different locations

Inside club:

These pictures were all taken without the full effect of the artificial light available because the main operator of the lighting equipment was not available. However, the stage and main floor seem like the main setting for the video, because the location will be empty, due to the fact that the story is that my artist is coming in venue to practice his performance later on in the day.

Artificial light from tube lights will be used as well as natural light from daylight in order to create a clear view for the audience. These stairs lead from the side entrance of the venue, upstairs to the front of the live music venue. I have chosen this setting because it will make the artist look dominant.

Outside Club:

The artist may leave or enter the venue from the front entrance. The venue has a back, front and side entrance to the live music venue which is located upstairs

The back door of the live music venue may be used in order to show the artist leaving the venue. There will be natural light of the sun, due to the fact that we will be shooting in daylight

Inside House:

Inside the house, I will use locations, the hallway and the artists bedroom. The hallway is long, therefore I can take a variety of shots from different positions and angles due to the different rooms. The light will come torches and light bulbs.

The room will have important mise en scene, which is relevant to the artists genre and enables the audience to feel apart of the music.

Goodwin's Principles - Intertextuality

 Intertextuality

Music videos should contain reference to different forms of media. For example video game, film or fashion. 'Lil Wayne's 6 foot 7 foot' is based on the film 'Inception' the audience recognise both the film and music video in future.

'R.E.M - Bad day' was based on a news report, which shows it being modern.

' Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication' was based on a video game.

Goodwin's Principles - Notion Of Looking

Notion Of Looking

Goodwin suggests that there are many different ways of looking in music videos. For example there are the aesthetically appealing women to look at, which promotes the saying 'sex sells'. The female body is used to attract the audiences attention and make them want to watch the video. There is also alot of eye contact involved, which creates the effect that the artist is speaking directly to them.

Akon - I Wanna Love You

The content of this music video has reference to the female body and females in general. For example the word 'Shawty' is an informal slang term for the word 'girl'. Also, there are female dancers that are the main body of the video, because the song is about women.

Goodwin's Principles - Image Motifs

Image Motifs

Record labels like to promote their artist. By using music videos is essential in today's society because it will be seen by the artists potential audience across the globe. Because of this, record labels demand close ups of the artist in order to create recognition.

An artists voice can be seen as an image motif, for example Drake and Lil Wayne. Drake has a softer, more Rnb voice which attracts the female audience whilst Lil Wayne has the raw deep voice, which seems more masculine.

Drake - I Get Lonely Too

Lil Wayne - MegaMan

Goodwin's Principles - Music and Visuals

Music and Visuals

This suggests there should be a connection between the music and visuals. By this, i mean the the tempo should flow with the music. If the song was slow, there should be slow transitioned shots and if the song was fast, the shots should be short and fast. Images or sounds could also relate to the music.

Usher - DJ got us fallin' in love

At the start of this music video from 0:15-0:18 the audience can hear a rewinding noise. Whilst at the same time, they can also see a broken bottle being pieced back together and a vinyl record being rewinded.

Goodwin's Principles - Lyrics and Visuals

Lyrics and Visuals

Goodwin states there should be a clear indicated relation between the lyrics and visuals of a music video. When this is created, it can allow the audience to follow and understand what is happening more easily.

Lil Wayne - 6 foot 7 foot

Every lyric is represented by a visual. Every new lyric shows a new scene. This creates a clearing understanding of what is being said. For example, 1:18 - 1:20 'I think you stand under me, if you dont understand me' the visuals shows a low angle shot, with the camera pointing up towards Lil Wayne, emphasizing the lyric and the fact that he looks dominant.

Goodwin's Principles - Genre Characteristics

Genre Characteristics

In music videos, their are three different types of music videos, which each represent different genre characteristics.

These types are:

  • Performance
  • Narrative
  • Conceptual

Performance:

The characteristics for a performance based video are recognised by a variety of different things for example an Rnb music video would show a dark, more gloomy performance, depending on the song's tempo. There is also a focus on the main artist and the back up dancers throughout the video.

Chris Brown - Take you down

Chris has tattoo's, which are commonly references as being apart of hip hop/ Rnb culture.

Narrative:

Narrative music videos are usually based on a story, which is fragmented to show for example flashbacks. It emphasis's the meaning of the song and creates a visual picture of what the song is about in the audiences mind.

Soulja Boy - Blowing Me Kisses

Soulja boy is reminiscing about a girl from his childhood days, however there was always something in the way of there relationship, for example they would be playing outside and her dad would call her in. There are numerous flashbacks, but in the end, he gets the girl.

Conceptual:

These videos are made from simple ideas and the fact that the artist or band is not the main focus, rather the visuals on screen.

OK go - Here it goes again

The visuals for this video has no connection to the lyrics. However, the whole video is taken in one shot, therefore if anyone had messed up, they would have to shoot from square one.

Evaluation of Practical task

Britany Spears - Hit me baby one more time

Before startin our music video task, as a class we were asked to create 'Britany Spears - Hit me baby one more time'. I was in a group of 4 people and we were creating a 10 second extract. I would embed our the finish video however due to group difficulties, our groups extract was not used, It was not satisfactory.

In our extract there was alot of dance moves containing various types of shots such as close ups and wide shots. Lip syncing was an issue due to the fact that we were never in time with music. For the  close up shots, we used a tripod therefore the camera would be striaght and professional.

For some scenes of the extract. we used a group of students to participate however we found out that we had to get parental permission therefore we had to shoot those scenes again which proved to be time consuming.

For editing the footage, we used iMovie. This was the first ive used this software and as a group, there were difficulties, in that everyone has basic knowledge of this software. The footage we had was sometimes not in sync and sometimes too short, therefore when i create my own music video, i know i will need to take more footage then needed for each shot because then editing will become easier.

The basic error in our extract was the fact that the other members of the group let me down, in that i mean me and another member went off to record footage whereas two other members stayed in the mac room to edit. Whilst we were recording our footage, they were editing the footage we had already uploaded. however once we were finish, they had not completed much and we were behind. We were on such a tight schedule which lead the editing being rushed.

The biggest hurdle in this task was working with a group and time mangement. I think i will work better by myself and i will be able to edit and shoot my footage at my own pace. Doing this task has my enabled me to understand the software i will be using to create my music video.
