Editing #4 - Final

I also used a variety of different transitions for my music video, which kept the audience's attraction obtained, when I was testing it

This is the transition section on iMovie:

I mostly used Cross Dissolve and at times I used Cross blur. That's because they are the most simplest and most effective.

However, I did use a couple others, for example Doorway, I used this to amplify the lyric 'Everyday I go in'. Here is the example:

I also used Fade to black at the start and end of my video which made it look professional.

By adding text in my video enabled me to understand the purpose of the words and how they can be used to illustrate meaning.

I used the font 'REBOARD' which is the same font used throughout my ancillary tasks.

Editing #3

I also added still frames, basically still images to the music video, to indicate the artist is thinking. There is no vocals or music for when the still frames are shown, this creates the atmosphere to build up tension.

Here's an example:

Editing #2

Another problem I came across when  editing was trying to get the music to match visual, relating to Goodwin's theory's.

I tried to manually change the scene after every 'kick' or 'drum' pattern however i found it was too time consuming.

Therefore I found out that there is an easier alternative. Its called using beat markers. I would get to this by clicking the clip trimmer button on the audio MP3 file:

Example:

Then beat markers would look like:

By pressing the 'm' key on the keyboard, the beat marker will change the scene to next scene. I found this useful and easy to understand. Which enabled me finish my project quicker and develop a greater understanding of the software iMovie.

Editing #1

After filming my footage, I began editing. The major flaw I noticed was the camera quality. The footage was very pixelated due to a poor camera.

However, I realised by adjusting the brightness, contrast and saturation of the scene, I could make it look more professional.

Here is an image of the editing panel:

Because my track is quite short, under 2 minutes, editing may not take long.

For the beginning of my music video, I used a genre characteristic used by modern music videos, which is a banner of information showcasing the artists name, and name of the track.

For example:

I have kept the same font as my ancillary tasks, which shows consistency and a creation of a brand identity.

Filming #4 - Final

So being the last day of filming, I had to work quick. I still had quite a bit to do before I finished. However with the help of friends and the equipment provided, I managed to wrap up the filming in less time then I thought.

I thought the overall filming process went well, however just the artificial lighting of both in the house and in the venue were quite weak to start with, although as time progressed, I learnt more about using different angles, for example high angle, low angle, also the different shot types like tracking shot, over the shoulder.

The fact that I have shown self reflective elements in the footage shows I have an excellent understand of the conventions what makes a music video successful.

For example:

This could be seen as self reflective because the artist is watching himself in an old music, via YouTube

Filming #3

Following my storyboard, I was able to shoot mostly all of the club scenes today, however there is still a few scenes that I need to do.

What I found i think when particularly well is the lighting filter, and the effect it gave on the scene.

Here is an image of what the filter looks like:

Those three lights forming a triangle shape are the filters, I have used the red filter to create a vibrant, more colourful atmosphere to the song.

This is the effect obtained from using the filter. It changed the whole mood of the scene, which is different and unique. This could be seen as an image motif.

As I was leaving the venue, I spoke to Bob, the manager, he told me that tomorrow is free and fortunately, so am I. Therefore I will be shooting the last few scenes in the club tomorrow and it should be a wrap.

Filming #2

The live music venue/club is only available on Wednesday's from 3pm till 6pm, due to bookings. Therefore because our prime location would be in the venue, we would have act fast. Fortunately for me, my artist and a couple others who are in the video, Wednesday we are all available.

we could only fit one recording slot a week so we will come back next week.

The first issue we had to tackle was lip syncing, however it was easy because the venue offered good quality, loud speakers which we were then able to play the MP3 through those speakers and the artist would sing along to the track as he performs.

Here is a short video of how my artist lip synced:

Filming #1

On the first day of filming, we did the majority of filming in the artists room, for certain scenes such as the black and white studio session. The picture above shows me using the the equipment provided, efficiently. For example using a tripod to hold the camera steady, which helped me because i often made the camera shake holding it free hand. The artist is wearing Beats by Dre, a genre characteristic of Hip Hop. It can also be portrayed as being an image motif because it makes the artist stand out.

The only problem i had filming in his room was the fact that there was not enough artificial light in order obtain the preferred lighting.

I used the iPhone 4 LED torch, which surprisingly worked. It offered enough exposure to certain areas of the artist which i wanted to amplify. For example the face, because that is his main image motif.

Tomorrow i have organised a slot in a live music venue called Club 85 in Hitchin.

Making of Magazine Advert

Costume Ideas

I have created a collage of the different costume ideas I am thinking about using for my music video:

The headphones and diamond chain show genre characteristics, the Hip Hop target audience is already familiar with these items, therefore if they see my artist wearing them, the audience will understand clearly, what kind of music my artist makes.

Expensive clothing, that is the Ralph Lauren Polo long sleeve shirt and Vans represent designer clothing, which could have a negotiated reading. Some could argue that the artist is very materialistic and looks at brand rather quality, which could reflect a bad role model and cause jealousy. However depending on cultural position, people may also look at the clothing as influential and inspiring to other people from the same ethnic background, my artist being Sikh.

The chinos, snap back hats and Barbour jackets may be used because they have come back into fashion from the 80s to modern society. By looking at these items in the music video, the target audience will know that the artist is up to date in the latest fashion and following the trend. Therefore the audience will feel they have a more personal relationship with the artist because they can relate.
